20th Thurs.
Got my call in to Marine at 1000. Took less than 20 minutes. That without doubt is the sweetest and most important phone call I’ll ever make.

23rd Sun.
Left Bundy at 0900 on ferry – “Ernie Pyle” – for Stoneman. Arrived at 1410. Into trucks to barracks Block 9 – Bldg. #3 on 14th and Jefferson in Section M.

Called home again and wished them Merry Xmas. Put in call at 1730 and got it thru at 2200. Sure was swell. Talked to Marine, the boys, and Mother.

20th Fri
Rain all day and cold too. Bell got a Red Cross Tel. – his daughter very ill. He is trying to get home. Will he make it??

22nd Sun.
Moved to our permanent area. I am working again with Dunham. Rain.

29nd Sun.
An uneventful week. Received some mail but have been damn disgusted with everything, even with Marine. I guess the folks at home only worry if we will come home in one piece and not the things we are going thru every day. Just what are they sacrificing?

31 Tues.
The end of another month. Weill I lost one of my bets on Japans defeat. Still I feel it is very close to the finish. Received 4 nice letters. Swell weather. Reset our permanent tent and have a damn nice home. Even have a radio.

12th Thurs.
Pres. Roosevelt died today. Sprained my ankle playing ball.

13th Fri.
Had my ankle xrayed, but there is nothing wrong but a sprain.

Got a few more letters from Marine. Sure seems nice to hear from her again.

16th Mon.
Played cards all day. Lost 28 pesos.

Getting damn monotonous waiting.

Just waiting. No news, except good mail service (10 days).

Still waiting. Had fresh meat.

24th Tues.
Started to load on LST #593 at 4:15. Done at 4:20. Hot and tired tonight.

On the way today. Sure having swell food. Baked spuds, steaks, hamburgers, and good coffee. We are using navy bunks.

26th Thurs.
Finest trip. Steaks, ice cream.

27th Fri.
Fresh potatoes, ice cold coca-cola.

Nothing new – nothing to do.

Nothing new. Still laying around waiting. Got a hell of a letter from Marine today and was never so close to calling it quits. I have about given and don’t give a damn what happens.

30 Fri.
Feel low. Same old crap.

31st Sat.
Our last day here. We’ll load out tomorrow on 3 LST’s. Got paid this PM for two months – Jan. and Feb. Made a nice deposit again. It sure counts up. Another month gone by and every day is a day closer to home.

Feb 1 -Thurs.
Was made a Corporal today and am platoon dispatcher and in charge of all trucks. I got new first mail. It has been a happy day.

2nd Fri.
Learned of the fire tonight and this was as unhappy day as yesterday was happy. I hardly know what to do. It first doesn’t seem true. Marine surely is a brave and wonderful woman to take things as she has.

3rd Sat.
Been writing letters most of the day today straighting out this mess. I am going to try to see if I can’t get home.

4th Sun.
Beautiful day. Got notice to move and worked all night to get convoy ready.

29th Fri.
Got 2 nice letters from Marine today. She still loves me too. Expect to be leaving in 3 or 4 days. I hope for the best.

30th Sat.
Got 3 nice letters from Marine. God how I love her. Received 4 pictures of them and it just brought a lump in my throat. I’d give all I possess to be back with them.

31st Sun.
The end of another year and one I never hope to live through again. Still I pray that I shall be as fortunate in health and safety as in the past year. At home too everything has gone swell. Marine has done a very swell job. So I begin another year with prayers for a safe return before the year is out. May God grant us this happy day.
