17th Wed.
We are at Calasiao. The towns we have come through are San Fabian, San Jacinto, Mangaldan, and Santa Barbara. Went after a Bailey bridge.

18th Thurs.
Sent up the bridge today. Hard work.

19th Fri.
Left at 4:30 AM to build a pontoon bridge right on the front. I thought we were to have it easy. Caught up to the infantry about 4 miles from the place we were to build the bridge. Well, they hadn’t taken it yet. Laid there all day waiting for the town to be taken. Moved back for the night.

20th Sat.
Got up at 1:00 AM and started for the bridge site (Agno River). It was at Villasis where the largest bridge in Luzon was bombed out (about 1/2 mile). The fighting was going on about 150 yards to our left. Pretty hot for awhile. Built 400 ft. of bridge (2 spans). Damn hard days. Got in at 5:30. Sure am tired.

21st Sun.
Rested all day. Wrote home. Lonesome as Hell.

22nd Mon.
Still laying around. Beautiful weather.

23rd Tues.
On the way again and on the road to Manila. We are to build a bridge (RR) where the Japs blew up a span. Hot as Hell today, 105 degrees.

11th
Hdq’s moved to our permanent area and a sea of mud and rain. Took us 10 hrs to cover 30 of the worst miles I ever saw. Landed in a cleared area at the end of a side road. Food, clothes, and equipment just dumped in the mud. It was dark as hell and mud almost to your knees. It was a pitiful sight. We set up one tent for every 12 men, brought in bunks and piled up our duffle bags. We looked at the time and it was midnight. We lay down in our wet and muddy clothes and tried to sleep. The mosquitoes were bad and no one had nets.

At the first streak of dawn we were up and so started another miserable day. We set up Hdqs. tents and tried the best we could to make our selves comfortable. All we had to eat was bread and jam and coffee. Supplies couldn’t get thru. At 5:00pm the six of us got a truck and hauled a load of coral for the tent. Finally at 8:00 we were done at it didn’t look so bad. We bathed in our helmets put on clean clothes and started to cook us some coffee. All the misery of the day seemed to fade away. I thanked God for this peace of mind and asked Him for strength to keep going. I went to sleep dead tired.

May 2 – Tuesday
Pulled tents and set up pyramidals. I’m in 1st Sq. of Hdq. platoon. Trucks bringing in supplies galore [? illegible]. On water detail filling lister bags and mess hall cans. On C-rations. Went swimming in the ocean. Felt good after being dirty for 2 days. Rain again, everything is flooded tents and all. Worked for 2 hrs. digging ditches and dams to get water out and stop it from coming in. Put on clean clothes the first in a month. No lights so went to bed early. Some of the boys are on detail at guard and unloading trucks.

April 19 – Wednesday
Terribly hot and are packed in like gally[sic] slaves. Ventilation not working either. The hole is Hell. Tonight at about 10:30 a sub raised out of the water on the port side about 200 yds. out. It was a monstrous thing about 300 yds. long. It flashed a message by a red code light swung to the left and disappeared. I was sleeping on the deck at the time and didn’t see it, but those that did were mighty scared.  It mist have been an Allied Sub without doubt. An [? illegible] Albatross lit on the masts to-night and everyone says that means good luck to the ship. I hope so, think all day long of home.

April 20 – Thurs.
Same old story. Hot as hell. Living like a bunch of dogs. It can’t be worse where we are going. The grub is just as bad.
