20th Thurs.
Got my call in to Marine at 1000. Took less than 20 minutes. That without doubt is the sweetest and most important phone call I’ll ever make.

23rd Sun.
Left Bundy at 0900 on ferry – “Ernie Pyle” – for Stoneman. Arrived at 1410. Into trucks to barracks Block 9 – Bldg. #3 on 14th and Jefferson in Section M.

Called home again and wished them Merry Xmas. Put in call at 1730 and got it thru at 2200. Sure was swell. Talked to Marine, the boys, and Mother.

3rd Wed.
Visited Ken and saw Danny Kaye in The Wonder Man. Sure is screwy. Ken figures on going home with the 31st. Wished to Hell we would find out something.

6th Sat.
Banged up my right elbow from a tick foul. Had it x-rayed but nothing broken. No mail. Started to load equip. today. Raining tonight.

8th Mon.
All 80 pointers and 35 and 38’s got their papers and left at 4:00 PM today on an LCI. Will go to Leyte in 18 hrs.

11th Thurs.
Ken came over tonight to say goodbye. He leaves for home tomorrow. Al came with him and we drank my beer and talked until 10:30. He sure was happy.

12th Fri.
Whoopie – we are free of our bridge equip. today. Have taken it all to Eng. Depot. I never had a more pleasant job.

Did our last work for the 506th this PM getting Pioneer Chests in tool tent. Then we cleaned up the tents and packed our belongings. At 12:38 we pulled out for 106 Engr. Said Goodbye 506. Show Dragon Seed, Katherine Hepburn.

6th Thurs.
Still raining every night. No rumors.

7th Fri.
Censorship was lifted today. Rain.

11th Tues.
Nothing new on getting home. Sure am getting restless. Nice weather now.

17th Mon.
Our discharge papers went in today. Those of 35 and the 80 pointers. How long now?

20th Thurs.
Rumored that the C.O. put in for bronze stars for some of the men. How many and who gets them is still unknown.

21st Fri.
Heard today by Gen. Marshall that points will be lowered to 70 on 1-Oct and to 60 by 1-Nov. I should be leaving by the 1st.

24th Mon.
The C.P. rescinded points and now they tell me I have only 79. I am lacking 3 days of having the extra point. What luck. Played my 1st B.B. game overseas. We won 49 to 16.

25th Tues.
Orders to go to Japan came today.

28th Fri.
Washed clothes today and practiced basketball tonight. No new rumors.

31 Fri.
The end of another month. The days seem longer than ever before. Tomorrow I take over the 3rd squad and maybe a Sgt.’s rating. Still watching how I stand in regard to going home. At present it looks like I shall see Japan before I get home. Elmer and I visited Kenneth yesterday and stayed for supper. Took pictures and had a nice visit. He envied our going to Japan.

Part of the bridge went out (a 400′ span) and we are salvaging the remains. Eating rations.

22 Tues
Still sitting tight. Plenty of snipers and a lot of vehicles are being blowed upon the road.

23 Wed.
Called out this AM. Went up 16 miles, put in a 72ft. assault boat bridge. Took the 22 of us 3 1/2 hours, which isn’t bad. We were plenty scared, but nothing happened.

24 – 25 Fri.
Still working at the bridge. Guards shot a Jap at 4:30 this morning as he was walking toward the bridge.

26th Sat.
Same old story. Plenty Jap snipers.

27th Sun.
Went after Lt. Birk. Risky trip.

28th Mon.
Our bridge went out last night.

29th Tues.
Picked up all equipment. Going to camp.

30 Wed.
Left today, but got hung up on a bypass and had to spend the night by the side of the road. Rained like Hell.

31st Thurs.
Dick’s birthday. I sure miss all of them. Have covered over 100 miles and are now held up by bad roads. Camped again. More rain.

July 1st
Still here. Still raining. Driving on right side of road starting today.
