April 22 – Sat.
On garbage detail to-day. Wasn’t so bad, at least had something to do. Unloaded mail from the #1 hatch for the boys on Milne Bay. I’ll bet they will be happy to-night. It rains almost every hr. or two. The boys that come up to the ship bring coconuts to trade for magazines. They say they haven’t anything to read. Life here seems pretty easy for them. They remarked that the first 6 mo. the native women were pretty dark, but after that they seemed to get lighter??? There are any number of villages in the hills but they are off limits for the soldiers. Ran out of pipe tobacco. The letters we wrote on ship were taken off too to-day. They’ll be taken to Australia, photographed and sent by plane to U.S.A. Hope the folks get them soon. Not so hot to-night. Damn poor grub again to-day.
