May 1st
Unloaded to-day in knee deep mud and rain. Traffic is a mess, trucks, jeeps, amphibians, are off road in ditches or buried in the mud. It is the most pitiful mess. I can see why gov vehicles have an average life of 11,000 miles. Were taken inland about 15 miles and pitched pup tents. Elmer and I bunked to-gether. Elmer took some 5 in 1 rations and we ate dried peaches and prunes, salted peanuts and cocoa. Slept under mosquito nets. Damned tired and dirty. No washing yet.
