April 19 – Wednesday
Terribly hot and are packed in like gally[sic] slaves. Ventilation not working either. The hole is Hell. Tonight at about 10:30 a sub raised out of the water on the port side about 200 yds. out. It was a monstrous thing about 300 yds. long. It flashed a message by a red code light swung to the left and disappeared. I was sleeping on the deck at the time and didn’t see it, but those that did were mighty scared.  It mist have been an Allied Sub without doubt. An [? illegible] Albatross lit on the masts to-night and everyone says that means good luck to the ship. I hope so, think all day long of home.

April 20 – Thurs.
Same old story. Hot as hell. Living like a bunch of dogs. It can’t be worse where we are going. The grub is just as bad.
